The Prevalence of Smartphone Addiction and Its Relationship with the Level of e-Health Literacy in Medical Sciences Students

Introduction: Smartphone addiction has increased in recent years, especially with the onset of COVID-19 among students. It is possible that as the level of eHealth literacy increases among students, their addiction to smartphones decreases. This study aims to investigate this hypothesis.Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 390 medical sciences students. Two standard questionnaires were used to gather data. The first questionnaire was the Smartphone Addiction Inventory Scale, and the second questionnaire was the eHealth Literacy Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytic statistics.Results: There was no significant relationship between the gender of the participants and the mean scores of smartphone addiction or eHealth literacy. However, the relationship between the age of the participants and the mean scores of smartphone addiction or eHealth literacy was significant. Only the relationship between the educational level of the participants and the mean scores of smartphone addiction was significant. The correlation between smartphone addiction and eHealth literacy in students was not significant.Conclusion: Age and educational level were significant factors influencing smartphone addiction. To decrease smartphone addiction and increase eHealth literacy, educational programs should be implemented for medical science students, who play a crucial role as future guardians of health.

The Dual Systems Model-Impulsivity and Narcissism as the Reflexive System and Self-Regulation as the Reflective System-of Smartphone Addiction.

The exploration of underlying mechanisms leading to the development of smartphone addiction has been limited, with only a few studies incorporating theories to provide explanations. Drawing upon the Dual Systems Model, this study tested the hypothesis that the reflective system of self-regulation would mediate the relation between the reflexive system of impulsivity and narcissism, and smartphone addiction in a sample of 298 undergraduate students. Participants completed a self-administrated web-based questionnaire containing measures of impulsivity (the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale), narcissism (the Narcissistic Personality Inventory), self-regulation (the Self-Regulation Scale), and smartphone addiction (the Smartphone Addiction Inventory). The findings from structural equation modeling revealed that self-regulation served as a significant mediator between impulsivity and smartphone addiction, as well as between narcissism and smartphone addiction. These findings offer insights that can contribute to the development of interventions and strategies that target impulsivity and narcissism by enhancing self-regulation skills.

Smartphone addiction and postural alterations in the cervical region in adolescents.

To evaluate smartphone addiction and postural alterations in the cervical region in adolescents. A cross-sectional study with 281 adolescents (15 to 19 years old), attending the 1st to the 3rd grades of High School, carried out between September and October 2019 in the city of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. Data collection took place in two stages. In the first, they answered four self-administered questionnaires: sociodemographic questionnaire, health conditions and smartphone use, Nordic Musculoskeletal Symptom Questionnaire (NMQ), Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI-BR). In the second stage, they were submitted to photogrammetry using the Postural Assessment Software (SAPO) and anthropometric assessment (weight and height). The software SPSS Statistics version 23.0 was used for data analysis. Of the total number of adolescents, 63.3% (n=178) showed smartphone addiction, using it for 5.8 hours (±3.5) during the week and 8.7 (±4.0) hours on the weekend. When analyzing postural alignment in the anterior view, a significant reduction in the lateral head tilt was observed when typing on the smartphone (p=0.002) compared to the anatomical position (baseline). In the lateral view, an increase in head anteriorization was observed during smartphone use (p<0.05). There was an association between smartphone addiction and head anteriorization (p<0.05). The use of the smartphone in the typing position causes postural alterations in the cervical region, especially in adolescents with smartphone addiction. Therefore, health promotion measures that alert adolescents to the adverse effects caused by prolonged smartphone use are necessary.

Relationship between depression, anxiety, stress and smartphone addiction in COVID-19 nursing students.

to verify the relationship between symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and smartphone addiction in COVID-19 nursing students. this was a descriptive-analytical study of 206 nursing students. A sociodemographic characterization and smartphone use instrument adapted from the literature and the following scales Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale and Smartphone Addiction Inventory were used for data collection. Sociodemographic data and smartphone use were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the relationship between symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and smartphone addiction was analyzed using multiple logistic regression. the prevalence of smartphone addiction among nursing students was 129 (62.6%) and there was a relationship between symptoms of moderate depression (p=0.049), severe/very severe depression (p=0.005) and mild anxiety (p=0.028) and severe/very severe anxiety (p=0.019) and smartphone addiction. the data show that the construction and implementation of smartphone use policies in the academic and hospital context to prevent smartphone addiction and control associated risk factors is necessary. (1) High prevalence of smartphone addiction among nursing students. (2) There was a relationship between symptoms of depression, anxiety and smartphone addiction. (3) Nursing has a leading role in identifying and managing addictions. (4) A multidisciplinary approach to the prevention and management of smartphone addiction. (5) Smartphone addiction in nursing students is a new issue in Brazil.

Adolescents’ Perception About the Relationship Between Self-Reported Smartphone Addiction and Emotional and Behavioral Problems During the COVID-19 Pandemic

This study aimed at understanding the adolescents’ perception about the relationship between Self-Reported Smartphone Addiction and Emotional and Behavioral Problems in the COVID-19 pandemic context. The qualitative research was conducted in Brazil with 16 adolescents aged from 15 to 18 years old classified as smartphone addiction by Smartphone Addiction Inventory scale. Data were collected through Focus Group meetings and prepared by means of Bardin’s content analysis. The findings resulted in two categories that describe how adolescents escape from the reality imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic using smartphones and how they perceive the emotional and behavioral changes caused by this addiction. They develop this behavior seeking to alleviate negative emotions and to escape from reality, but this relief is momentary and ineffective, as this addictive relationship proves to accentuate emotional distress.

Smartphone Addiction among University Students and Its Implications for Learning

This research paper aims to investigate the impact of smartphone addiction on the academic performance of higher education institutions students. Primary data (n=500) was collected from students under five departments using simple random sampling technique. Smartphone Addiction Inventory Scale (SPAI) and multiple logistic regression method was employed in the study. Results show that factors like age, age of first-time smartphone use were found to be statistically significant and positively associated with college students’ academic performance. The paper presents supporting evidence to higher education institutions authorities to design a strategy for the interventions in higher education institutions to enhance academic performance of students who are very vulnerable to excessive smartphone users.

Smartphone addiction, musculoskeletal pain and functionality in university students – a observational study

ABSTRACT Smartphone addiction and its excessive use could cause musculoskeletal symptoms such neck and upper limb pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between smartphone use and musculoskeletal pain in the upper limbs and neck, as well as to observe the relationship in between smartphone addiction and musculoskeletal pain and upper limb function in university students. It is a cross-sectional, analytical study. A total of 165 university students participated in the research. Each student had their own smartphone. The students answered a structured questionnaire about pain in the upper limbs and neck; the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI) and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand questionnaire (DASH). Prevalence of neck and upper limb pain was 34.0%. Smartphone addiction and its use to play games and listen to music were risk factors to upper limb pain. Moreover, the smartphone addiction and age proved to be risk factors to neck pain. There was correlation between DASH and SPAI scores, and there was association between DASH score and neck and upper limb pain. Being of the female sex and smartphone addiction predicted the risk of incapacity development. We found association between neck and upper limb pain with smartphone addiction. Functional incapacity was associated to neck and upper limb pain. It was predicted by smartphone addiction and being of the female sex.

Cognitive domain-independent aberrant frontoparietal network strength in individuals with excessive smartphone use

Excessive smartphone use (ESU) may fulfill criteria for addictive behavior. In contrast to other related behavioral addictions, particularly Internet Gaming Disorder, little is known about the neural correlates underlying ESU. In this study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to acquire task data from three distinct behavioral paradigms, i.e. cue-reactivity, inhibition, and working memory, in individuals with psychometrically defined ESU (n = 19) compared to controls (n-ESU; n = 20). The Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI) was used to quantify ESU-severity according to a novel five-factor model (SPAI-I). A multivariate data fusion approach, i.e. joint Independent Component Analysis (jICA) was employed to analyze fMRI-data derived from three separate experimental conditions, but analyzed jointly to detect converging and domain-independent neural signatures that differ between persons with vs. those without ESU. Across the three functional tasks, jICA identified a predominantly frontoparietal system that showed lower network strength in individuals with ESU compared to n-ESU (p < 0.05 FDR-corrected). Furthermore, significant associations between frontoparietal network strength and SPAI-I's dimensions “time spent” and “craving” were found. The data suggest a frontoparietal cognitive control network as cognitive domain-independent neural signature of excessive and potentially addictive smartphone use.

Análise da dependência do uso de smartphone em comparação à dor, sono, ansiedade e depressão em universitários

Abstract Introduction: Smartphone use has become a popular social communication phenomenon worldwide. Its excessive use can compromise daily routines and habits, which is associated with sleep disorders, stress, anxiety and pain. Therefore, the university student stands out, as they has a lifestyle in which it is necessary to reconcile daily activities with curriculum activities, aggravating psychosocial factors. Objective: To investigate whether smartphone addiction influences sleep quality, anxiety, depression and pain in university students. Methods: We carried out an analytical cross-sectional study. For data collection, the following self-administered questionnaires were used: Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI-BR), to assess smartphone dependence; Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), to evaluate sleep quality; Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, to assess anxiety and depression (HADS), where it was subdivided into HADS-A for anxiety and HADS-D for depression; and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) to determine physical pain intensity. The sample consisted of 301 university students studying physiotherapy and physical education at the State University of Northern Paraná (UENP). They were divided according to the score obtained in the SPAI-BR between the “regular” group (up to 6 points) and “predisposed” to smartphone dependence (7 or more points). Results: The comparisons were statistically significant in favor of the regular group: the predisposed group obtained a higher score for the questionnaires used with an average NRS of 2.37 points, average HADS-D of 9.05 points and average HADS-A of 6.01 points. Differences between groups were statistically significant: NRS, p = 0.018; HADS-A, p = 0.001; HADS-D p = 0.001; and PSQI, p = 0.001. Conclusion: The university students analyzed in this study classified as predisposed were more prone to being addicted to their smartphone, and they were more likely to have anxiety, with a worse quality of sleep and with a greater intensity of pain.

Psychometric properties of the Smartphone Addiction Inventory - Short Form (SPAI-SF) in Brazilian adolescents

The Smartphone Addiction Inventory - Short Form (SPAI-SF) is shorter version (10 items) of the original version of SPAI (26 items). In this study, we aimed to: (i) adapt and test the internal structure of the SPAI-SF, using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), multigroup confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA), and network analysis; (ii) analyze the internal consistency, temporal stability, criterion, predictive and construct validities of the SPAI-SF. A total of 392 adolescents (M = 12.76; SD = 1.00) completed the following measures: demographic questionnaire, SPAI-SF, Smartphone Addiction Scale - Short Version (SAS-SV), and the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). The CFA showed good fit indices with the original four factors, and MGCFA indicated measurement invariance for gender. Network analysis provided an understanding of the core symptoms of problematic smartphone use (PSU) for both boys and girls. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.865 (95% CI: 0.841 - 0.887) and indicated a robust temporal stability. The instrument demonstrated acceptable overall reliability measured by Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's Omega criteria (α = 0.722; ω = 0.725) and did not show floor and ceiling effects. The scale's significant correlations demonstrated convergent and criterion validities of the SPAI-SF with SAS-SV, IAT, and Smartphone usage data. The SPAI-SF is a reliable instrument to detect PSU in adolescents.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Akıllı Telefon Bağımlılıkları ve Baş Ağrısı İle İlişkisi

Amaç: Bu araştırma üniversite öğrencilerinin akıllı telefon bağımlılık oranını, etkileyen faktörlerini ve akıllı telefon kullanımının baş ağrısı ile ilişkisini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Gerekçe ve Yöntem: Bu çalışma tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel bir çalışmadır. Örnekleme, bilinen bir popülasyon için örnek belirleme formülü kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Verilerin toplanmasında sosyodemografik özellikler, baş ağrısı ile ilgili değişkenler ve “Akıllı Telefon Bağımlılığı Envanteri – Kısa Form (SPAI-SF)” kullanılmıştır. Veriler tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA), bağımsız t-testi, Ki-kare analizi ve lojistik regresyon analizi kullanılarak değerlendirildi ve sayılar, yüzdeler ve ortalama±standart sapma olarak ifade edildi. Bulgular: Katılımcıların, %56,6’sı kadın, %43.4’ü erkektir, %55.2’si 20 yaş ve altı yaş grubunda olup %61.4’ü aile evinde %33.5’i yurtta kalmaktadır. Öğrencilerin %86.3’ü mesaj ve/veya telefon açmak için, %72.7’si internet kullanmak için, %69.4’ü sosyal medya kullanmak için vb. nedenlerle akıllı telefon kullandıklarını belirtmektedirler. Öğrencilerin %32.7’si akıllı telefon bağımlısıyken %67.7’si de akıllı telefon bağımlısı değildir. Öğrencilerin akıllı telefon bağımlılık durumuyla baş ağrısı sıklığı, baş ağrısı şiddeti, akıllı telefonları günlük kullanım süresi ve akıllı telefonları uykudan önce kullanım süresi arasında anlamlılık bulunmaktadır (p&amp;lt;0.05). Öğrencilerin erkek olma durumu 2.123 kat, ilk akıllı telefon kullanım yaşındaki bir birimlik artış 1.147 kat ve akıllı telefon bağımlısı olma durumu ise 2.216 kat baş ağrısı sıklığını arttırmaktadır (p&amp;lt;0.05). Sonuç: Çalışmamızda öğrencilerin yaklaşık üçte biri akıllı telefon bağımlısıdır. Öğrencilerin akıllı telefon kullanımının baş ağrısı ile ilişkisi, sık sık baş ağrısı çekenlerin ve baş ağrısı şiddetli olanların ATBÖ-KF puanlarının yüksek bulunmasıyla anlaşılmaktadır. Aşırı akıllı telefon kullanımının sağlık üzerindeki olumsuz etkileri hakkında bilgilendirici faaliyetler yapılması önerilebilir.

Evaluating Gender Differences in Problematic Smartphone Use

Abstract: The Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI) is widely used to measure problematic smartphone use (PSU). Although the SPAI has been translated and validated in different countries, its measurement invariance across gender has received little research attention. This study aimed to examine whether men and women interpreted the Italian version of the SPAI (SPAI-I) similarly and, consequently, whether the observed gender differences in SPAI scores, which have been shown in previous studies, could be due to true differences, rather than to differences in measurement. Six hundred nineteen Italian young adults ( Mage = 22.02 ± 2.63; 55.7% women) took part in the study and completed the SPAI-I. Multigroup CFA was applied to test the measurement invariance across gender, and the item parameter invariance was investigated with the item-response theory (IRT) differential item functioning (DIF) method for multidimensional models. Evidence of measurement invariance across gender was found. Only one item (i.e., item 14, “The idea of using smartphone comes as the first thought on mind when waking up each morning”) out of 24 items of the SPAI-I showed DIF with a large effect size. Gender-related differences found with the SPAI-I reflect true differences in smartphone overuse rather than specific characteristics of the measure.

Smartphone addiction and its relation with bullying, sleep quality, and depression among children

Smartphone addiction has emerged as a major concern among children over the past few years and incredibly increase with the outbreak of COVID-19, making a greater threat to their physical and mental health. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of smartphone addiction and its relation to bullying victimization, sleep problems, and depression among children. Sample: a total of 300 children (102 boys and 198 girls), 9-14 years old participated in the study. Setting: This study was conducted at two schools (Salka primary school, and 'Salka' preparatory school) in Salka village, Shpin Elkom city, Menoufia Governorate, Egypt. Tools: Four tools were used for data collection. Tool 1 consists of two parts. Part one was sociodemographic data questionnaire and part two was Smartphone Addiction Inventory Scale. Tool two: Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). Tool three: School Bullying/Victimization Scale. Tool four: Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Results: According to the cut-off level on the smartphone addiction, sleep quality, depression, and bullying scales, of the 300 children, 209(69.67) were addicted to smartphones and 246 (82%) have poor sleep quality, 264 (88%) were depressed and 249 (84.41%) were bullied.

Problematic Smartphone Use and Its Associations with Sexual Minority Stressors, Gender Nonconformity, and Mental Health Problems among Young Adult Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Individuals in Taiwan.

Smartphones are a necessity for many people; however, problematic smartphone use (PSU) may negatively influence people’s mental health. Using multivariate linear regression analysis, the study examined the associations of sexual minority stressors [namely perceived sexual stigma from family members, sexual orientation microaggressions (SOMs), and internalized sexual stigma] and gender nonconformity with PSU severity as well as the associations of PSU with depression and anxiety in young adult lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals. This cross-sectional survey study recruited 1000 young adult LGB individuals (500 men and 500 women). PSU severity was assessed using the Smartphone Addiction Inventory. The experiences of perceived sexual stigma from family members, SOMs, and internalized sexual stigma and the levels of gender nonconformity, depression, and anxiety were assessed. The results indicated that perceived sexual stigma from family members, SOMs, internalized sexual stigma in the dimensions of social discomfort and identity and gender nonconformity were significantly associated with PSU severity in LGB individuals. Moreover, PSU was significantly associated with depression and anxiety in LGB individuals. The findings highlight the significance of developing strategies for the prevention and early detection of PSU and sexual minority stress in LGB individuals.

Cortical surface variation in individuals with excessive smartphone use.

Excessive smartphone use has been repeatedly related to adverse effects on mental health and psychological well-being in young adults. The continued investigation of the neurobiological mechanism underlying excessive smartphone use-sometimes also referred to as "smartphone addiction"(SPA)-is considered a top priority in system neuroscience research. Despite progress in the past years, cortical morphology associated with SPA is still poorly understood. Here, we used structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 3 T to investigate two cortical surface markers of distinct neurodevelopmental origin such as the complexity of cortical folding (CCF) and cortical thickness (CTh) in individuals with excessive smartphone use (n=19) compared to individuals not fulfilling SPA criteria (n-SPA; n=22). SPA was assessed using the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI). CCF and CTh were investigated using the Computational Anatomy Toolbox (CAT12). SPA individuals showed lower CCF in the right superior frontal gyrus as well as in the right caudal (cACC) and rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC) compared to n-SPA individuals (TFCE, uncorrected at p<0.001). Following a dimensional approach, across the entire sample, CCF of the right cACC was significantly associated with SPAI total score, as well as with distinct SPAI subdimensions, particularly time spent with the device, compulsivity, and sleep interference in all participants (n=41; p<0.05, FDR-corrected). Collectively, these findings suggest that SPA is associated with aberrant structural maturation of regions important for cognitive control and emotional regulation.

Smartphone addiction in COVID-19 pandemic times

This study aimed to evaluate smartphone addiction, sleep quality, quality of life and depression among dental students before and during the first wave COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and explore how smartphone addiction influences the other variables. 57 dental students answered the smartphone addiction inventory, Pittsburg sleep quality index, WHOQOL-bref and research diagnosis criteria for temporomandibular disorders axis II questionnaires before and during lockdown. Statistical analysis was conducted using Wilcoxon test, Mann-Whitney U test, Spearman tests and linear regression models considering the smartphone addiction inventory total score as the independent variable. The high mean scores on smartphone addiction on both times are remarkable. The smartphone addiction prevalence was also high on both times (68.66% and 71.92% respectively). Overall sleep quality improved. However, there was no significant change on overall smartphone addiction, quality of life and depression grade during lockdown. Tolerance using smartphones increased during lockdown, especially for women. Smartphone addiction showed negative correlation to quality of life and positive correlation to depression, subjective sleep quality and sleep medication use. Smartphone addiction was a predictor to total WHOQOL-bref score, all WHOQOL bref domains, sleep medication use and to depression on both times, before and during lockdown. Smartphone addiction was directly affecting quality of life. Despite the growing smartphone use among university students due to the pandemic restrictions, this study showed that the overall smartphone addiction, quality of life and depression grade were not influenced by the lockdown restrictions. However, it was observed an improvement on sleep quality during this period among dental students.

Psychometric Properties of Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI) in Russian Context

Smartphones facilitate communication, education, information, and entertainment through a diverse array of mobile applications. Excessive smartphone use has become a significant societal issue. The research community has explored both the positive and negative consequences of mobile phone use. The phrase “problematic smartphone use” refers to an excessive pattern of smartphone use that may have negative consequences. Smartphone addiction may present with symptoms that are unique from Internet addiction. Severe sadness, anxiety, and tension are all associated with problematic smartphone use. Numerous negative consequences are discussed, including mental health problems, diminished physical fitness, and poor academic achievement. According to the findings of the literature analysis, there is no inventory that evaluates smartphone addiction in the context of Russia. The goal of this study is to examine the psychometric characteristics of the smartphone addiction inventory (SPAI) in a Russian context. Several Russian Federation universities performed the study during the autumn semester of the 2020-2021 academic year. To enhance the inventory, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were utilized on 209 students. As a result, research on the validity and reliability of the Smartphone Addiction Inventory were done in the Russian setting. The research revealed a brief inventory of 14 items and three factors (functional impairment, anxiety, and compulsive behavior).

FATORES ASSOCIADOS À ADICÇÃO AO SMARTPHONE EM UNIVERSITÁRIOS DE ENFERMAGEM

ABSTRACT Objective to analyze the factors associated with smartphone addiction in nursing students. Method a descriptive, correlational and quantitative study, conducted in two public universities in the Northeast of Brazil, from April to June 2019. Four instruments were used for the purpose of data collection: sociodemographic characterization, Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI) scale. Results the majority of nursing students were female, 239 (80.2%), and had an average age of 22 years. One hundred and sixty-five (55.4%) declared themselves brown, 236 (79.2%) only studied and 11 (37.2%) had one to two minimum wages as family income. Regarding marital status, 277 (93.0%) were single and 168 (56.4%) lived with their parents. Two hundred and two (67.8%) did not practice physical activity and 269 (90.3%) had never smoked or smoked for less than one month. The overall prevalence of smartphone addiction in nursing students was 142 (47.7%). The factors associated with smartphone addiction in nursing students were: AUDIT (p=0.036), overall PSQI score (p &lt;0.001), sleep quality (p=0.008), sleep latency (p=0.001), medication use (p=0.050) and daytime dysfunction (0.000). Conclusion there is a need to develop educational interventions for rational use of the smartphone inside and outside universities and to develop public policies for health promotion and prevention of related comorbidities.

ARE MILLENNIAL MOTHERS ADDICTED TO SMARTPHONES DURING A PANDEMIC: STUDY IN MALAYSIA AND INDONESIA

Smartphones are increasing, especially during a pandemic where lockdown and distance are enforced in several countries. Smartphones have become more fully functional because they are used to keep in touch or entertain. We conducted a study on millennial mothers who had early childhood. A total of 169 millennial mothers were obtained from Malaysia and Indonesia during the pandemic Covid-19. This study uses the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI) by (Y. H. Lin et al., 2014). The measuring instrument is based on four factors: compulsive behavior, functional impairments, and withdrawals, modified from the Indonesian and Malay versions. The results show that the addiction of millennial mothers to smartphone use is more in the high category. Besides that, we linked the length of time using smartphones with several demographics, such as the number of children, employment status, and education. Implications and findings are discussed in detail.
